In our program, your mentor works with you to break your goals up into specific weekly activities, designed to be constrained, relevant, and escalating in difficulty. They will provide an overview of these projects in your Learning Plan, but then adjust them as you go to make sure that they are meeting your goals and focusing on the areas of most relevance to you.
Famed for her 2014 opera Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed that Line to Freedom, Dr. Nkeiru Okoye’s music has been described as “emotionally charged and musically sublime.” Okoye also cites inspiration from a dizzying range of influences including Gilbert and Sullivan, Gershwin, Sondheim, Copland, gospel, jazz and yes, even Schoenberg. Born and raised in New York, the composer studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division and later at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she completed degrees in Music Theory and Composition. Okoye later went onto complete her PhD at Rutgers University. Her varied and well-crafted music sits nicely in a diatonic framework, making it easily accessible and highly enjoyable for a range of audiences. With music as captivating and loud as her recent opera, I believe we’ll be hearing a great deal from Dr. Nkeiru Okoye.
Content-makers often inquire about my services or how they can create a podcast themselves. Most podcasts, however, tend to be personal passion projects and ultimately don’t have the budget for a professional studio to record and edit each episode. So hosts or producers will turn to YouTube, friends, and family to educate them on how to create their content, and this is where a lot of people struggle. Let’s dig in.

Luckily for myself, and all the other people out there like me, underneath the faded canopy of the bland mainstream lies a multiverse of challenging, engaging, explorative, enlivening work which I would say is the real “music of now,” and which I love deeply. So many colleagues and collaborators here in New York, bands with whom Tredici Bacci has had the honor of sharing bills, the musicians that are out creating their own platforms of presentation (because thats the only way to ensure that their voice will be heard), I admire them all so much and am endlessly inspired by them.
This is one I’m sure you’re familiar with, even if you might not have known its fancy name. It’s also sometimes called Verse-Repeating or Chorus form, because it essentially repeats the same section, but with new lyrics each time. If we’re thinking of things in terms of “A” sections and “B” sections and so forth, this would just be multiple As, one after the other.

Last of all, a book for those of us who may have started off home-recording and producing, without taking the time to learn an instrument or music theory. Hewitt lays out a vast array of the basics of musicianship and theory (the circle of fifths, for example) in a way that will make sense to anyone who entered music via DJing, sound recording, or just playing around and doing it themselves. Many of his examples are based around the familiar DAW piano roll, so they will be highly applicable to those who don’t have experience with traditional notation and sheet music.
Martin hopes to help all of his students tangibly further themselves as musicians, as well as meeting the goals of the course. He says the most important advice he ever got was to only speak when you have something to say — a lesson he applies to music.

When saving your projects, make sure that you label them clearly so you can recall their specificities. You can also use folders to organize different projects and versions of songs. Here’s an example of how I often label my tracking projects:

From her native Tunisia via France, Abdelwahed made her name playing sets in places like The Boiler Room and Berghain. Her work fuses gritty urban dance rhythms with unconventional textures; it’s ambient, industrial, and traditional Arab music all wrapped up within an experimental techno framework. In an interview she poses a question that summarizes her artistic vision: “If the people who invented house and techno were Arab, if they had grown up with our rhythms and our instruments, what would it sound like? Would it be the drum and bass, house and techno we know today? I don’t think so.” Abdelwahed’s latest album is Khonna, released in November 2018.
